Sandals Negril, Jamaica Review
The most stressful part of the wedding planning that I ran into was not getting enough info from Sandals. They definately know what they are doing and they are great with weddings. But it was frustrating not being able to get pictures of an actual wedding going on, not knowing the exact order of the ceremony, etc. I tried to include as many details as possible of Sandals Negril and their wedding process, so it's kinda long =) Also, let me know if you want to see more pictures. I hope this can help you too.
The flight to Jamaica was wonderful. We had first class from Atlanta to Montego Bay since Christian has Platinum Medallion Status or whatever it’s called. Christian asked the flight attendant if I could hang my dress up in the closet and they did it with no problem and a smile. There were 3 other brides on the flight and they hung all of their dresses up in the first class closet too. We sat down, relaxed, ordered some mimosas and were there in no time.
The airport was not that bad at all. It took maybe an hour to get through everything. There were 3 other flights getting in at the same time and since we were seated in the front of the plane we kinda hurried to get off. The line did start to build up after everyone was off the planes but customs was really good about getting everyone through quickly. I was kinda nervous about our oot bag stuff (we had chapstick, sunscreen, advil and the bags with us) but I had heard they might give you crap if you have stuff in bulk. We still packed it all together. You also are suppose to check a box if you are bringing in wildlife or something on the customs form and I was nervous since we had sand dollars and starfish in the suitcase. I didn’t check yes but our bags were never opened coming or leaving Jamaica! =)
We got our bags pretty quick and found the Sandals lounge. They offer you a drink and you can hang out for a bit if you want. They even have a place in the lounge for you to hang your wedding dress up =) They got our names, put the resort tag on our bags and were introduced to our driver. We had a private transfer to the resort (with the twilight package) so we didn’t have to wait for more people to come. I think they try to wait to have a few couples and then take you to the resort together. It was kinda cool to enjoy it by ourselves. Our driver was cool and told us about the sites along the way. The drivers are kinda crazy there. They drive on the left side there and kinda cut people off and stuff. Nothing to not feel safe compared to seeing people drive in Italy! The guys on motorcycles are crazier, weaving in between cars and buses, not smart, lol .You see a little bit of poverty on the way and SO many goats! They were everywhere just chillin and eating the grass. Think it took us about an hour since we didn’t stop half way (most buses do to take bathroom breaks, get more beer, etc, so it normally takes an hour and a half). You can also take a small airplane from Montego Bay to Negril for a fee. My friend did it and she said it was really cool. It was beautiful and the pilot even let her fly the plane for a little bit. It looked like it landed like right next to the resort.
We thanked and tipped our driver and he helped bring our bags in. Don’t forget to tip them, they are not part of Sandals, just contracted by them. We were greeted with cold towels and rum punch. It only took a couple of minutes and we were checked in. We were given a huge Sandals wedding binder that we needed to go through and our ID cards. Thank goodness you don’t have to wear those bracelets like other AI resorts make you, you are suppose to carry the resort card with you all of the time so they know you belong there (we rarely did, they knew who we were, lol).
We were escorted to our room with our bags after we were all checked in. At first the room did not seem right. I told the lady that we were supposed to have a beachfront room with a balcony. She told me that was not what we were booked for and that it would be several hundred dollars more a night if we wanted to switch; I said OK. After she left, I dug out all of our paperwork and e-mails (bring everything with you, you never know what you might need!) and saw that we were booked for a Honeymoon Grande Luxe Beachfront Concierge room on our paperwork. So we went back down to the front desk and showed them. They had to get a manager and she told me that was not the paperwork sent to her but since I had that, she would honor that. Then I found out later that any bride and groom that come down there with a “group” is suppose to get the Beachfront room. I didn’t get why I had to go through that when we had a group but it was OK, they took our bags and moved us to the correct room. Our room was in the Paradise Buildings, had an awesome view and was right in the middle of everything. The resorts grounds are kinda big and it was nice to be smack in the middle (and pretty close to the wedding gazebo). The room was very nice, a huge king bed, a flat screen TV, desk and a balcony. We changed into our suits and hit the beach. The water was awesome! Perfect temperature and so beautiful! Sunsets were unbelievable!
It was very nice because we had almost 4 days to ourselves before anyone else got there. Only his brother and his g/f came on the 4th day so we had a good 4 days to relax before all 27 guests were there. 2 days after we arrived (Monday) we met with our WC, Rocio. (There are 2 of them). She was so nice and laid back. I guess from watching tv shows so much you see WC very headstrong and bold. But she was so great and was willing to accommodate whatever she could for us. She went over the whole big white book with us. I wish I would have taken pics of it now but it’s just a big white binder (you don’t get to keep it). There are a few sheets to fill out in the front, like your names, what flowers you want, location of ceremony you want, music you want, menu for breakfast in bed as Mr. & Mrs, what kind of cake you want, etc. They want you to figure that stuff out before you “interview” as they call it. There are pictures of all of your options: of all of the flower options, ceremony décor options, cakes, lists of your music choices for the ceremony (they only provide ceremony music), ceremony wording, etc. She asked us once about upgrades, we told her we were cool and she didn’t ask again. She even talked me out of spending money, since we got the elements of both packages, we got 2 free bouquets. But I didn’t think that I wanted daisy’s for my sister’s flowers but she talked me into it instead of spending another $120 on another bouquet.
We chose to get married in the main wedding gazebo. It was right next to the building we were staying in, it could hold everyone in there and it was right on the beach, couldn’t be more perfect! We opted to not use any decorations b/c do you really need some with the ocean behind you? =) We wanted the cocktail reception near the beach so we could watch the sunset and then the dinner reception to be back in the garden, where it is way more private. The only way people can see in on it is if the are looking over the balcony from their room of the Paradise Building. If you want to get married in the sand, on the beach, you have to purchase one of the flower arch’s.
After we told Rocio the basics that we wanted, we told her the things that we wanted to alter. The only thing was that wanted to add in 2 readings and the sand ceremony. We also wanted to have the sand ceremony before the kiss (they normally do it at the end) and everything was cool. We asked some questions that I had thought of from looking through the book. They were nice enough to dye my flowers coral and put my fake pearled stephanotis in my bouquet for free. We also were going to be getting the elements of both the twilight package (it’s not offered anymore but is close to one of the Preston Baily’s Packages) and the free weddingmoon package.

So we ended up with 2 bouquets, 2 boutonnieres, 13 pictures, which I wasn’t sure if we would get the perks of both, so that was cool.
We ate at all of the restaurants but the Italian one (4 C’s). Figured they are not known for their Italian food in Jamaica (and we were going to Italy in a week), so why bother. =) Barefoot by the Sea was my favorite restaurant. We ate dinner there 3 nights. It was pretty close to the swim up suites, so I felt kinda odd for those people staying in those rooms but oh well, they probably weren’t in their room at that point. The seafood was great there. It was so cool to be eating actually on the beach, with your feet in the sand. The staff was really nice and was never overcrowded. We ate at Kimonos (the Japanese steakhouse type place) one night. It’s the only restaurant that you need reservations for. Our cook was so funny and entertaining. We kept quoting Dave Chappell all night and don’t think anyone else got it but us. We were seated with 5 other couples that were all on their honeymoon. The food was pretty good but I drank way too much wine that night =). BTW, if you want the better wine (not the house wine), they charge you for it. But I thought the house wine was good. We only ate breakfast at the Sundowner, but we ate there 3 times. The breakfast was pretty good. We seemed to be the only ones there like every time, which was nice and relaxing. Sandals Cafe was supper close to our room and right on the beach so we pretty much always ate there for lunch. The jerk chicken sandwich was very yummy. The cooks were always having fun in there and there is a little bar on the backside of it. There was always someone waiting on food when I came up but never took longer than 5 minutes to make my food. The Bayside Restaurant was the buffet. We are never a big fan of buffets so we only ate there for a couple breakfasts’ when we kinda in a hurry. It was alright for a buffet. Lots to choose from too. The birds are everywhere! If you leave your food for a second, they are on it.
If you haven’t heard already, you will have some people offer you drugs. If you don’t want anything, just politely say no and they’ll leave you alone. The ocean and very front part of the beach is public, so anyone can walk down. The security guards just follow them, just making sure they aren’t harassing anyone but the funny thing is, I saw people buying stuff right in front of them, they don’t care as long as you are OK. =) As soon as you walk off of resort property, they are waiting for people b/c they can hang out there. When on Sandals property, they have to be continuously walking unless you are trying to talk to them.
Monday after meeting with Rocio, we decided to walk down the beach. Christian’s aunt and uncle were staying Couples Swept Away, so we walked down there, met up with them and went to Margaritaville. It was pretty cool but since it was during the day, it wasn’t too crazy. We had a few drinks and walked even further, we did a lot of walking that day. If you walk off the resort property, make sure you take your ID card with you! When we stepped off the Sandals property and on/off the Beaches property, they want to take down your room number and name, just to make sure you don’t wander off; it’s just a precaution. It was pretty cool to walk along the public beach and the other resorts and see what was going on. It was a Jamaican holiday so everyone was out! There was a ton of vendors and cool bars along the way. Don’t forget that you are aloud to hang out at Beaches SandyBay (right next door) and Beaches Negril, if you want to.
Later that day our concierge Carlene, came and introduced herself. She was awesome! Asked us if we needed anything; brought Christian some stuff for drinks and more bottled water in less than 5 minutes. Said to call her if we needed anything. She was such a doll.
Tuesday morning we decided to go into town before his brother came. Sandals calls a Taxi for you and our guy drove us around for a good couple of hours for $50. He took us to some shops and then we went to the local supermarket We bought a bunch of coffee, hot sauce and red stripe bottles for our welcome bags. They don’t have bottles at the resort, so we wanted our guests to have a cold one waiting when they got there. We had heard of place called Miss Brown’s Famous Mushrooms. We had to check it out. They even had a menu of various mushroom items like soup or tea. Obviously, didn’t eat anything there but had to check it out. Then we ate at Sweet Spice. Most of the locals told us to go there. Christian had goat curry (yes, they eat them there) and I had a lobster curry dish. Hands down, they best food we had there. We drove farther down where it starts to get rocky to a resort called Sunset on the Cliffs. It was awesome b/c it was such a beautiful view and there was no one really around. There were a couple people chillin by the pool and we were able to just look around and enjoy the beauty and had a beer. It was cool b/c we could leave our stuff in the taxi while hanging out and not have to worry about him taking off b/c they are contracted through Sandals. He would just hang out with us or wait by the car.
Wednesday, the parents arrived and we just hang out. By Thursday night, we had 24 of our 27 guests there. I guess some of our parents and guests just asked to be upgraded and got the same level that Christian and I were in. They of course put my Dad and Step-Mother right next to our room. Nice, huh? =) Our concierge, Carlene, did a lot for us that night. We were not supposed to have any kind of private or semi-private dinner but she reserved enough tables for everyone at Barefoot By the Sea so we could all eat together. She even had little “Reserved for XXX and Family” signs put on tables. It was really cool to have almost everyone there and to be able to hang out at once before the wedding stuff started.
Friday Morning, I got up and saved like 25 chairs at 6am. That was the one crappy thing, you gotta get up early and save chairs if have a group b/c they go fast, plus the butlers save them for people who have that level room. But I got them =) There definitely are enough chairs at Sandals, just sometimes a PITA to find them b/c people will be gone all day and just leave their towel on the chair. They do that with the floating rafts. A couple nights, I drug them upstairs all drunk so we could have them the next day, lol. As you may already know, Hedonism is right next door to Sandals. We figured we would see some of their guests walking by topless or whatever but never did when it was just Christian and I. But of course when our families and friends arrive, they start coming out of the woodwork! =)
Friday, we were trying to figure out any last minute details while laying out. I had my first moment when you have to realize you can’t let yourself get upset about the little things. Rocio told me I couldn’t have the table set up that I wanted b/c they didn’t have enough rectangular tables. But she came up with something kinda similar. I wanted 4 rectangular tables creating a square, so it was empty in the middle and instead would have a round table, then a rectangular, then another round table. (see my pics to see what I am talking about, that sounded confusing). For some reason I became so upset about it b/c that’s not exactly how I had pictured it. I was even told that I needed a drink =) But Christian and I sat down and reconfigured the table set up while hanging out on the beach with everyone and it was totally fine. Then we figured we should practice the sand ceremony. We didn’t bring down glasses for it so we had to find something b/c Sandals charges $100 for the sand ceremony jars, um no. We just ended up using two of Sandals champagne glasses and tied flowers to them, Sandals seemed totally fine with that. We were using the actual sand from the beach, so we figured out how much we needed and laid it on our porch to dry out. Christian and I had our manicures and pedicures Friday afternoon. Yes, I talked him into it =) It was pretty nice. Our package included a massage for him too, so he had his after his nails. I saw several girls getting their hair done while there and they did an awesome job. Didn't see anyone getting their make-up done though but looked like they had good products and set up for it. The salon and their employees were very nice. Don't forget to tip them too and they work off of comission.
Friday night was our rehearsal dinner. The location is determined during your interview, you don’t necessarily have a choice, you are just told depending on other events going on. It was reunion week that week, so we were to have ours at the Bayside buffet. Dinner was suppose to start at 5pm but they were kinda waiting for sunset so it would be beautiful (and not as hot) for dinner. We kinda took over the bar area while waiting to be seated. I was all worried that we were gonna have to eat at the buffet and there were gonna be a ton of people around. Well it ends up that they were having some kind of a party dinner across the street instead of having the buffet that night. So we had the whole place to ourselves. They set up 3 different tables for us and the service was awesome! My sister is the pickiest eater ever and our waiter was nice enough to place an order at the Italian restaruant so she could have a vegetarian meal. You have 4 different menus to choose from for rehearsal dinner, if it’s included in your package. We chose mostly seafood for everything. Each table had their own waiter and they were so nice! After dinner, we all went to the Piano Bar. That seems to be where everyone hangs out at night. Everyone was drinking and dancing, we had a blast. When we went back to our room, they had made a towel swan and rose petals all over the bed. It was so sweet
Saturday morning, the day of the wedding, I got sick a few times. I was afraid it was food poisoning or something b/c I wasn’t hung over. Guess it was just all the stress and excitement. But I was fine within a couple of hours. We had our “Breakfast in Bed” since we couldn’t do it the next morning as man and wife since we were leaving early the next morning. (They were cool about switching the day of the breakfast). It was so yummy and we had so much food! Then I went and got a massage (it was awesome and so needed!) and then hung out with everyone on the beach for a while. Then it was time for me to get ready. Christian went with some of his family to Rick’s Café and hung out and then went to his sister’s room to get ready later. I wanted a little time to myself, so grabbed some lunch from Café Sandals and chilled by myself for a little bit. Christian’s aunt owns a salon so she was nice enough to offer to do my hair. She showed up at about 2:30 and starting on my hair. It turned out awesome and I loved it! Then my sister did my make-up which actually turned out really good too! I didn’t do a practice run with either of them! If you are thinking of getting your hair and make-up done at the resort, I’ve heard wonderful things about them. It’s kinda pricey but worth it. Then I slipped into my dress. It took my Mom and sister like 20 minutes to tie the corset on my dress! When I originally purchased it, there was a good few inches in b/w the fabric, since I lost weight, they couldn’t get it tight enough, lol.
I was supposed to see Christian at 3:30, before the ceremony. I wanted to b/c I knew I would be a mess (crying) during the whole ceremony if not and wanted that private moment b/w us. Well, it ended up being at like 4:15 and Christian was supposed to meet the WC at 4:30 in the wedding office. We were gonna try to get some pics before the ceremony, but that didn’t work out. We were gonna meet in the garden originally b/c there wasn’t anything else going on at that time but since I was late, something was going on, so we met on the beach. But it was so perfect, it was for only like 5 minutes but it was enough to see him, let it all sink in, give each other a kiss and a hug and say I’ll see you soon. Since Christian’s sister took our pics and my sister was trying to help with make-up and the dress, they both had only like 15 minutes to get ready! I don’t know how they did it.
Christian and his brother (BM) meet Rocio and the officiant at 4:30. They went over the basics of the wedding and Christian showed Rocio how to use our docking station since she was going to be starting and stopping the music for us. Rocio met my sister (MOH) and I at 4:45 in my room with our bouquets. I loved them, mine turned out exactly as I pictured. Before that Carlene (our concierge) stopped in to see how I was doing. She was so sweet and even helped my sister get my dress even tighter; it was a perfect fit then.
She took us down to the left side of the Paradise Building (our building), where we met my Mother, Brother and Father. Christian’s Mother and Brother were suppose to be there too so he could walk his mother down but that didn’t happen b/c they were already down there, oh well. I have been saying forever, I know I’m gonna cry throughout the whole thing. As my Mother and Brother were getting ready to walk down, I thought I was gonna loose it then. Right then one of the parrots in the cage almost next to us squawked really loud. It scared the crap out of me. Then it just made me laugh. He kept going, so it just made me crack up instead. I was so giddy and smiling the whole time instead =)
The ceremony was perfect. After our interview, I felt like I still didn’t really know what was going on during the ceremony. I guess since we didn’t get a rehearsal, it made me a bit uneasy. But I thought, they do these everyday, they know what they are doing and they did! First he does the welcome, then the marriage part (I take you….), then the ring exchange, then the blessing of us and then the kiss. We added in 2 readings and the sand ceremony after the welcome.
We had some mishaps during the ceremony. First off, Christian forgot that he had a microphone on and while the minister was praying, Christian told me there was a topless lady walking by. You can totally hear it on our wedding video! =) When we were suppose to exchange our vows, he said repeat after me. He didn’t say anyone’s name, so I was like who? Can totally hear that on the video too. It makes it that much better though. =) Apparently there was another topless lady walking by that we didn’t see. They put up signs that say ceremony in progress, please don’t enter or something like that. Well I guess this lady and her husband didn’t see the sign or just didn’t care. I guess our WC ran down to stop them. The husband tried to cover up her chest like that was gonna do something, thinking that would help. Kinda ones of those things you gotta be there for but guess it was pretty funny. Everything went so smoothly and it was perfect. Everyone says it goes by so fast and you barely remember and it’s so true! So I’m sorry that part wasn’t extremely detailed. I’m so glad we got a videographer with our package! They will e-mail the “webstream” within a couple weeks so you can approve it. You can change things like the music or cut things out. Our video was supposed to only be 15-20 minutes long and it turned out to be 29 minutes too. The quality of the DVD is pretty good too, I am so glad we got one.
I’m not gonna lie, it was freakin hot! We got married at 5PM and I remember standing there with sweat dripping down my legs. I am so glad they were able to fit everyone in the large gazebo, so no one was in the hot sun. I wore my hair half up, half down and that was still OK. I think it was just the tulle and layers that made it so hot. If you are thinking of walking barefoot, be aware that the sidewalk gets very hot too! I wore flip flops but know some girls couldn’t even walk down barefoot b/c it was too hot.
Right after we kissed, we did the receiving line, then this was the one thing that pissed me off the whole week. I had told our WC during our interview that Christian's sister would be taking wedding photos of us and she said that was fine. She wasn’t a vendor, she was being nice and does it as a hobby and went to school for it for a while. As soon as the ceremony was done, Christian's sister starting taking pics. Well the resorts photog was saying we needed to come with her. I told her Leah was taking pics. To make a long story short she was being very rude and refused to take pics when Leah was. She was almost acting like a five year old, pouty brat! I understand pics don't work if you are trying to look at 2 different cameras at the same time but she was very unprofessional about it. I flat out told her not to take pics then. After wasting 10 or so min she said just come with her for 15 and then we could do whatever. She was fine and great with us after that but I was pissed that right after the ceremony was over that I had to deal with that. It was suppose to be a fun exciting moment, not pissed off one. Everyone said the look on my face was pretty bad, lol. I'm not one to get mad but I thought that was uncalled for, that was my almost one Bridezilla moment all week. There wasn't anything wrong with her work. She took some great pics, it was just the unprofessionalism and rudeness that upset me. We got 13 free pics with our package and they look great. We even ended up purchasing 3 more pictures, with the negatives. The rest of the photogs around the resort were cool too. So please don’t let that part of the review worry you, it was just one bad moment.
After we were done with the resort photog, we joined our guests at the cocktail reception. I was perfect b/c it was set up in b/w the smaller gazebo and the Palm Buildings. So pretty freaking close to the beach. It was perfect b/c it was close to when the sun was setting, so we could all see it. It was such a romantic and fun time! We had a separate “sweetheart table” and then they had other round tables for everyone else. We had our cake cutting, our first toast and then our first dance. The steel drum player stopped for a minute and we just played the i-pod for our 1st dance. He started back up afterwords and then Christian’s sister took us to the beach to take a lot of pictures. After that, we went back to the gazebo where we got married and kinda had a moment with just the two of us. It was pretty cool, to stand there, watching the sun set, just with him. We took our sand ceremony stuff back to the room and then hung out with our guests. It was suppose to be an hour long cocktail but ended up being an hour and a half. There was plenty of appetizers and alcohol there. They were nice enough to set a table up for our signature picture mat too.
They kinda waited for the sun to set so we could enjoy it and then moved to the back garden for the dinner part. My sister was nice and had laid out the seating cards and the starfish and sand dollars for decorations and they provided menus. They charge you a fee to set up any decorations, so it was just easier. You don’t really need a lot of decorations. They provided their standard centerpieces too. (Fishbowl with some sand, candles and shells). They had a full open bar and kept the drinks coming. We had our toasts and ate. The food was great. Probably better than the other restaurants. Since we were leaving the next day, we had to pick out the pics that we wanted that night. We were pretty tipsy and had so much going on when we went to the photoshop to pick them out. But we got our 13 free ones and got 3 more. They charge $20 a picture and then another $20 if you want the negative, ouch! We were happy with the pics though. They even had the photo album with the pics ready that night for us! The menu we choose from was four courses and the guest could choose from two different entrees.
After the dinner was over, we all went to the Piano bar. We drank some more and danced. Christian and I didn’t stay down there too late b/c we still had to pack and our flight was leaving the next morning for Europe. People kept coming by our room and we ended up getting only 2 ½ hours of sleep b/c of packing and then getting up at 6am the next morning. So we did not have a problem sleeping all of the way to Rome. =) That night we walked into roses all over the room, candles everywhere, a cute card, swan towels and a bubble bath. It was so cool and romantic. They also leave you the night before you leave a letter stating what time you need to leave the resort. (You give them your flight info when you check in). You just place your bags outside of your room and they take care of it. We took a small bus to the airport and ended up being on it with Christian’s parents and my Aunt and Uncle. The line for Air Jamaica was kinda long and took a while but we were extremely tired, so that could have made it worse =)
We are so glad we chose to have our wedding at Sandals Negril, Jamaica. The weather was perfect all week, think it rained maybe once? The staff was so nice and friendly, we had a blast and made our wedding absolutely amazing! They did an excellent job of accommodating to a large group of us too! Even though it was reunion week too, they did a great job of kinda keeping them away with other things to do and even though the resort was booked full, it didn’t seem over crowded at all. Rocio was so awesome! She was so nice and did a great job of telling us when and where we needed to be and what was going on. I don’t think the poor lady ever sleeps! If I can give you any advise: give yourself plenty of time to get ready. Do not sweat the small stuff, there were a few things that happened no one even noticed. There were some things that I didn’t even notice until afterwords, lol. If it’s in your budget, get a videographer, or at least have some one record it. Your wedding day is one of the best days of your life but it goes by so fast. Enjoy, relax and breathe! Always try to smile, even if you’re crying, there is always someone taking a picture =) Please let me know if you have any questions by paging me on the North Dakota nest board!
